6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. (John 1: 6-10)
What is our purpose on the Earth?I know this is something that I have often wondered. After listening to one of Rob Turner's sermons about John 1: 6-13 it became clear. First, in regards to John the Baptist, God sent him to this Earth. When we find the true light that is God we can't help but spread the word and the happiness that we have encountered. We want to share God with the world. Because of this we are "sent" from God, just as John the Baptist was, to be "a witness to testify concerning that light [God], so that through him all men might believe." Second, we are defined in terms that we are witnesses that were sent to witness based on the verse 7. Third, we are humbled in the fact that, in verse 8, even John the Baptist knows that he is not the light but that God is. We, then, need to remember that we are not the light of this world and it does not revolve around us, but rather around Him.
So, our mission, our purpose in life, is to be a witness of God sent from God to witness to others and to remember that it is not us that we are witnessing of, but we are witnessing of God. We are to remember that this world isn't about us, but about Him. This is our purpose: our mission.
